Athena Award
Criteria
At Visitation, a senior is eligible for consideration if she has lettered in at least two varsity level sports and is currently in good academic and disciplinary standing. A committee composed of the Athletic Director, Upper School Director, Guidance Director, and one or two teachers, will review nominations and make a final selection. Seniors may submit their own name for consideration, or they may be nominated by a coach, or other interested party. Nominated athletes will be asked to submit an athletic resume to the selection committee. The committee may also solicit information from other sources as needed.
Subjective and objective criteria will be used in the selection process. Subjective criteria will include but not be limited to the following: demonstrated leadership, attitude, school-day behavior, sportsmanship, and adherence to the Visitation Athletic Philosophy and the MSHSL Code of Conduct. Coach recommendations will also receive consideration. Objective criteria will include awards won at the varsity level during a nominee’s career at Visitation, but no award won at the junior varsity level or below will be considered. Academic awards, community awards, and awards won while participating in a non-school sponsored athletic activity will also not be considered. The following point system will be used to rank each award:
One point: three sport letter winner, most improved player, most dedicated player, captain, all conference honorable mention, all metro honorable mention, state appearance
Two points: most valuable player, all conference, all metro, all state honorable mention
Three points: conference most valuable player, all state
Because subjective criteria will be used, the senior with the highest point total using the objective criteria may or may not win the Athena Award. The Athena selection will be made in late March, with the winner announced as soon thereafter as possible.
