Nomination and Selection Process
Varsity coaches will submit written nominations for this award no later then May 1st . The Athletic Director will form a committee that includes the Athletic Director, Upper School Director, Dean of Students, Athletic Department Administrative Assistant, and one teacher. The committee will evaluate each nominee and reach a decision no later than May 15th. The winner will be announced at the Athletic Awards Convocation at the end of May. If an athlete other than a senior is involved in a spring sport and does well in section and state competition, the committee may choose to honor that athlete with a co-excellence in athletics award. The presentation of this second award would take place in early September of the next school year.
Subjective and objective criteria will be used in the selection process. Subjective criteria will include but not be limited to the following: demonstrated leadership, attitude, school-day behavior, attendance, sportsmanship, and adherence to the Visitation Athletic Philosophy and MSHSL Code of Conduct. Objective criteria will include athletic awards won at the varsity level during the current school year. Academic awards, community awards, and awards won while participating in a non-school sponsored athletic activity will not be considered. Because subjective criteria will be used, the athlete with the highest point total using the objective criteria may or may not be declared the winner. The following point system will be used to rank each award:
One point: three sport letter winner, most improved player; most dedicated player, all conference honorable mention; all metro honorable mention, state appearance
Two points: most valuable player; all conference; all metro; all state honorable mention
Three points: conference most valuable player; all state
