The English Curriculum at Visitation

Our Philosophy:
The Upper School English Department reflects the philosophy of the school – awakening and fostering the student’s understanding of herself and her relationship with God, the Visitation community, and the world around her – through a directed study of literature. Faculty members assist students in analyzing artistic genres and literary techniques in order to gain insights from reading. In addition, students learn to express themselves freely, thoughtfully, and effectively in oral and written forms.

Outcomes of the English Program at Visitation:
Through their English classes, students will

  • Pursue a comprehensive program in each area of the curriculum: composition, grammar, public speaking, vocabulary, and literature.
  • Follow a literature curriculum that includes works of sound literary merit. Students read from a variety of genres in both classic and contemporary form – all at an age-appropriate level.
  • Learn to express themselves well in expository writing: paragraphs, research papers, critical papers, and essays on tests. In addition and where possible, students can engage in creative writing and an elective in creative writing. Our students have traditionally found success on college entrance tests and advanced placement exams as well as in college writing.
  • Increase leadership skills and poise through speech and oral presentation units.
