MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENT PHILOSOPHY

The Mathematics Department of Convent of the Visitation School strives to pattern its philosophy after that of the school itself.  It is a Christian and Salesian philosophy which attempts to recognize and respect each student's right to develop and grow intellectually in a manner and to a degree that is commesurate with her own individual ability.  Our departmental philosophy is also concerned with fostering in each mathematics student an awareness of and appreciation for the mathematical principles on which nature's laws are based and in terms of which the members of our society live and interact.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

In its curriculum and in its methods of instruction and evaluation, the Mathematics Department at Visitation consciously attempts to humanize the educational process. We sincerely believe that it is the individual person whom we are teaching, and not just the subject matter, which we hope she learns, that is most important. At the same time, we strive to create in each of our students an understanding of and an appreciation for mathematics as one of the many stepping stones that must be walked upon in the process of becoming an educated, whole person.

In more specifically mathematical terms, it is our goal that each student be prepared to be a lifetime learner and user of mathematics as a way of analyzing and understanding a complex world. In order to achieve that goal, each student needs a strong foundation in critical thinking skills and appropriate use of technology as well as computational skills and an understanding of basic concepts of statistics.
