SOCIAL STUDIES DEPARTMENT

Social Studies Department Philosophy

The Social Studies Department at Visitation School provides a well-rounded liberal arts education within the framework of a Christian environment and Salesian spirituality in order to prepare students to live in the pluralistic society of the 21st century.

Department Goals:

1. Students will be provided with a rich academic sequence of classes designed to instill an understanding of diverse cultures as well as an appreciation of our shared humanity.

2. Students will be taught to read widely and critically, to write and speak coherently, and are encouraged to develop an intellectual curiosity as well as a lifelong love of learning.

3. Students will be instructed that all citizens have an obligation, rooted in social justice, to contribute to the improvement of society. Therefore, good citizenship, social responsibility and service to others are key components of our program.

4. Students will be provided with academic training in all of the social science disciplines: history, political science, anthropology, sociology, psychology, economics and geography.
