Philosophy

The Visitation World Language Department’s goal is to support the mission of the school and to carry forward the motto, Non Scholae sed Vitae, Not for School but for Life, by providing learning experiences which will invite students to be active participants in the pluralistic and multilingual society of the 21st century.

We are committed to offering a rich curriculum which requires students to recognize the importance of and begin the mastery of the five national standards for foreign language learning which are summarized in the five C’s: communication, cultures,  comparisons, connections, communities:

•to understand and communicate in a language other than English,
•to gain knowledge and understanding of other cultures,
•to develop insight into the nature of language and culture,
•to connect with other disciplines and acquire information
•to participate in multilingual communities at home and around the world
(Standards for Foreign Language Learning, 1996).

Visitation world language students speak a language other than English, study in a language other than English, and study about a language other than English from the beginning of their language study at Visitation. Our department believes that second language learning will tear down the barrier of language and build respect for those who speak the studied language thereby building a sensitivity to all who speak the diverse languages of the world.
