Grade 2 Curriculum

In second grade, students learn in an environment that is nurturing. A holistic approach is used to help them develop academically, socially, emotionally, and spiritually. They engage in a variety of activities that are stimulating and that match their learning styles.  Each child recognizes that he or she has special gifts and talents and are offered many opportunities to embrace them. Second graders sing songs, do art projects, act out in plays, and complete monthly projects to help reinforce what they have learned. Each month, there is a new theme for the Thematic Enrichment Board which includes challenging activities that enhance what is being taught. They use their creativity to complete a variety of products such as stories, poems, dioramas, and art. Second graders engage in hands-on activities when doing investigations in science and solving problems in math. Technology is integrated into the curriculum to enhance what the students are learning. They have a balance between working independently and working collaboratively with other students to help enhance the concepts being taught and to strengthen their social skills.

Second graders meet with their Eight Grade Prayer Buddy and Fourth Grade Friday Friend monthly. They develop positive relationships with each other in the classroom and within the Visitation community at prayer services, mass, making cards and singing songs to the Visitation Sisters. They participate in the Junior Achievement program in which they learn about economics and business opportunities.  Second graders explore career opportunities and are actively involved with the Rain Forest Alliance to help save our world’s rainforests. Students understand the importance of learning and how it applies to their life, gain an appreciation of it, and become global citizens by helping others.
