ENGLISH 12:  CRITICAL READING AND WRITING  
This course focuses on the critical reading and writing skills students need to perfect before college.  Students will read literature of recognized literary merit ranging from British classics to contemporary works of varied cultures.  Genres include drama, novels, poetry, and literary essays. Writing assignments will include a critical paper, reading journals, a research paper, and other expository writing.   We will give special emphasis to improving written and oral expression.  All literature units will include vocabulary-building components.  Required for 12th grade students not enrolled iin AP English Literature and Composition. 


A.P. ENGLISH LITERATURE AND COMPOSITION. 
This seminar focuses on a variety of challenging works of recognized literary merit which frequently appear on the AP exam.
Genres include drama, novels, poetry, and literary essays. In addition to strengthening independent reading comprehension, students will engage in  numerous independent writing projects and discussion with a goal of  improving written and oral expression.    Students who complete this course may take the A.P. exam for possible college credit.   Required for 12th grade students not enrolled in English 12:  Critical Reading and Writing.  All of the following are required for admission to the course:  Minimum B+ for each semester of 9th - 11th grade English; 85th - 90th percentile on PSAT verbal section;  and 9th - 11th grade teacher evaluations on academic and creative writing and class participation.  Departmental approval required.

SUMMER READING REQUIREMENTS
English 12 Critical Reading and Writing:
          Lord of the Flies by William Golding
          Pygmalion  by G. B. Shaw 
          The Power and the Glory by Graham Greene

AP English Literature and Composition:
         Lord of the Flies by William Golding
         King Lear  by William Shakespeare

In addition, AP students must also read one book by the authors they are studying for their research papers.  Information on these books and other summer grammar requirements is given to students at the end of the junior year.
