Three seniors recently attended a health career exploration session called Scrubs,
Gloves, and Microscopes at the University of Minnesota. Kaija P.,
Carrie S., and Monique T. enjoyed the experience because it helped them gain more knowledge
about the field of nursing, which is of interest to them for future study.
They
started the session with a presentation from the Admissions Director of the U
of M Nursing School and also heard from a current nursing student. They visited the nursing
skills lab and were able to go to different stations, where current nursing
students showed them the different skills you learn in the nursing programs.
Some
of the topics they learned about were: EKG’s and the instrument used for the
test, inserting IV’s, taking vitals, protective wear, weighing and measuring
people, how to wrap incisions, and use crutches and walkers properly.
Overall,
this experience was really great and it gave them more knowledge about nursing.
The seniors recommend this program to anyone interested in health care related
fields.
Every month a different health field is covered; upcoming sessions include veterinary medicine, sports medicine, dentistry and mortuary science.
