WELCOME TO CREATIVE WRITING
Writing is a performance art. Like musicians and painters, our objective in this class is to observe ~ that is read ~ the work of experienced artists. We then practice the art of writing by emulating, by writing in all genres: personal essays, creative non-fiction, fiction, drama and poetry. We are here to write ~ a lot. Writers read. Writers write, and write some more. Then writers re-write ~ making changes large and small, and they rewrite again.
When the semester ends, students will have created a portfolio of finished work in every category we undertake. They will have a Writer's Notebook in which they will have generated ideas enough to continue to create work long after the semester. Also, they will receive handout models of work from accomplished writers in each genre. They will frequently share their work with classmates in our Writer's Cafe class periods; real writing comes alive only when shared with an audience.
For a semester, then, each student will be a practicing writer. This is an honorable endeavor, hard work and fun, too: challenge; pleasure; joy. We will at all times be respectful of one another and our work.
"Our job as writers is to find the value and the story." Leslie Marmon Silko
"The true artist: drwas out all from her heart, works with delight, makes things with calm, with sagacity, composes her objects, works dexterously, invents; arranges materials, adorns them, makes them adjust." Technicians of the Sacred ~ Aztecs
"There are all those early memories, one cannot get another set." Willa Cather
