Jump Start & Study Skills

Jump Start Reading, Writing and Math programs offer skill building and reinforcement in each of these three key areas to learning.  Each one hour session utilizes a research-based approach.

Jump Start Reading is offered to students finishing kindergarten through adult-aged learners.  The Orton Gillingham approach, a multi-sensory approach, is the main method used to teach and reinforce decoding (sounding out), spelling, reading comprehension and fluency.

Jump Start Math is offered to students completing grade one and beyond.  Students learn important math skills through the concrete (hands-on), representational (pictures), and finally abstract (numbers) method of learning.

Jump Start Writing is offered to students who have completed grade two and beyond. The curriculum used was developed at the University of Kansas.

Study Skills and Test Taking teaches students entering grades six through nine how to get rid of the blocks to learning and get organized. Learn all the tricks for organizing books, lockers, and assignment notebooks. Learn effective ways to read texts and take notes. Learn strategies for good test-taking skills. Take the stress and anxiety out of test taking. You will learn how to understand the test questions, how to use time effectively, and how to think actively and logically. Acquire the knowledge necessary to take multiple choice, essay, short answer, true/false, and a variety of other tests. Clear the path to better grades. Set goals for a great start to the new school year!

Essay Test Writing Strategy helps students entering grades five and six to understand the criteria for crafting an excellent test essay. Take the stress out of those essay tests by learning strategies specific to answering short answer and longer essay test questions. This class will teach you how to use graphic organizers to plan your ideas and quick tips for organizing your thoughts during the test. Get off to the WRITE start with this class!

Theme Writing Strategies teaches students entering grades seven through nine how to craft multi-paragraph papers. Students will explore different ways to introduce their topics, organize their ideas, and create interesting introduction and concluding paragraphs to make their papers flow. Engage with other students and share ideas while learning in a collaborative environment. Students will learn and use a writing strategy developed by the University of Kansas. The theme here is long-term success!
