Jump Start Reading
The Orton Gillingham Program

(For all ages 6 to adult)

Instruction is designed to improve word attack, passage reading, spelling, and listening skills. Hour long sessions are provided in individual or small group settings using the Orton Gillingham approach to language arts or other appropriate multisensory techniques for teaching reading. An information session will be available on June 21 at 7pm to parents or others describing the program and procedures used in this specialized reading approach. Evaluations and follow-up recommendations will be available at the end of the summer session. This program is under the sponsorship of the University of St. Thomas College of Education and Dr. Ann Ryan.

Jump Start Writing
(For children completing grades 2 through 10)

Instruction is designed to strengthen or further develop writing skills using the Kansas
Sentence Writing Strategy. Focus begins with simple sentences and builds strategies to formulate paragraphs. This program develops skills in capitalization, punctuation, and proper grammar for creating complete sentences. Enrollment for each group will not exceed four students. Students are grouped by age and needs assessment. Evaluations and follow-up recommendations will be mailed at the end of the summer session. This program is under the sponsorship of the University of St. Thomas College of Education and Dr. Ann Ryan.

Jump Start Math
(For students completing grades 1-7)

This is a remedial math program. Children will be instructed in small group tutorials.  Children will work on skills in basic math computations and problem solving. Strategies will be developed and ample practice provided to improve the child’s application of the math functions. Instruction is one-on-one, two, and will not exceed 3 to a group. There will be pre-testing and post-testing for a cumulative reporting and diagnostics. This program is under the sponsorship of the University of St. Thomas College of Education and Dr. Ann Ryan.

Reading Comprehension
(For students completing grades 1-7)

Learning to read the words is just not enough. Effective readers combine fluency with comprehension. This class will address the higher level thinking skills necessary for reading. Children will be taught about sequencing events, critical thinking, drawing conclusions, using supporting detail, identifying main idea, separating fact from opinion, comparing and contrasting, and cause and effect. Class size limited to 6 per class.

Study Skills & Test Taking

Get rid of the stumbling blocks to learning and get organized. Learn all the tricks: organizing books, lockers, and assignments notebooks. Learn effective ways to read texts and take notes. Learn strategies for good test taking skills. Take the stress and anxiety out of test taking. You will learn how to understand the test questions, how to use time effectively, how to think actively and logically. Acquire the knowledge necessary to take multiple choice, essay, short answer, true/false, and a variety of different kinds of tests. Clear the path to better grades. Set goals for a great start to the new school year!

Reading Enrichment Fun
(For students who are young readers)

Session I – I can read with Frog and Toad
Session II – I can read with Arnold Lobel and Friends
Activities in this fun reading adventure will include short writing projects, craft projects, cooking, and outdoor classroom activities. You will read stories such as The Frog and Toad are Friends, Mouse Soup, Owl at Home, and many more. You may ] come to both sessions or just one. It will be just plain fun!

Camp Outdoor Classroom

Learn all about the world outside our Minnesota front door. All activities will be in the fabulous new outdoor classroom facility on the Vis campus. Study pond life, be amazed by the insects that live in the garden, knock your socks off tending the flora abundant in the garden, discover the wildlife, be a rock hound as you learn all about the rock forms from all over the United States hidden among the plants of the garden. You will use computers, draw, and stretch your imagination as you explore the outdoor classroom.

Scrapbooking: A Summer to Remember
(For children completing grades 1-6)

All you have to do is bring your favorite photos and then you will put them together with your whimsy and creativity. Perhaps you will have a sports theme or memories of your favorite vacation. It’s all up to you! Basic materials will be provided. By the end of the project you will have created your own scrapbook. This will be a lot of fun!

Minnesota Summer Arts Camp
Drama…Dance….Visual Arts…..Writing
(For children completing fourth grade through eighth grade)

This is a fabulous experience! By the end of the camp they will have:

  • Presented a rehearsed and memorized monologue
  • Been exposed to ballet, tap, jazz, and modern dance techniques
  • Created one visual art piece per day and one group project per day
  • Explored her/his personal writing style and written an original piece
  • that will be publisher ready
Director and creator Renee Carey, who has sixteen years experience, and her dedicated staff will provide an exposure to four areas of the fine arts while developing trust, support, and encouragement for each artist.

“It’s a Girl Thing” Camp
(For girls completing grades 3 –5)
Empower Your Daughters

This girls’ camp is all about giving your girls a chance to be the best that they can be. When a girl believes in herself she holds the world in her hand. This camp will highlight everything a girl needs to know to be successful.  Activities covered will be: the importance of being physically active, healthy eating habits, how to have a positive body image, the power of positive thinking, how to be a media-savvy girl, being smart and safe on the internet, the importance of positive relationships. Girls will be exercising each day; kickboxing, yoga, and stretch training are just a few examples of activities.
Come and join us for a week long camp of fun and growth.

American Doll® Adventure
(For girls completing grades 1-4)

Josefina
You will be able to investigate the life and times of Josefina. There will be arts and crafts projects as well as cooking adventures. You will learn from Josefina stories of how she lived. Come and have a fabulous time!

Kaya
Kaya is a Nez Perce Native American girl from 1764. She lived with her family
in the Northwest United States. You will learn how the Nez Perce lived as
well as many other Native American groups such as the Plains and Woodland
people. Learn about traditions, hear stories, make crafts from the various different
cultures. Most of all come and have fun!!!

Montessori – A Summer of Discovery

Come explore the many adventures that go beyond the regular school year.  It can be an introduction to the Montessori experience or continued growth.  Each session will be a new adventure. The children will spend a week learning all about the wonderful world of puppets, another week will be all about science, the last two sessions will be spent traveling around our solar system, the universe, and beyond! Keep the educational experience alive and exciting at Visitation’s Montessori summer of fun.

Fabulous Fabrics
An art adventure for children completing grade three and up

Students will experience fabric art through the exploration of three projects. Silk fabric painting is a traditional Asian painting process that combines silk and watercolor paints that result in colorful bold paintings. The batik process is a way of decorating cloth with wax and dye. A special material called Bateek-O will be used to achieve batik results without using heat or melted wax. In the final project students will find weaving easy and fun using a variety of materials and looms. Most of all the students will have fun!

Drawing Your World
For children completing Kindergarten and up

Students will learn basic drawing skills that will improve their ability to draw creatively and independently. Students will focus on drawing the basic shapes and lines found in an object and then adding detail. Various media will be available for students to add color to complete their drawings. Students will collect a portfolio and have a wonderful time!

Jewelry Art
For children completing grades three and up

Students will experience the fun and creativity of making their own jewelry. This class will explore beading techniques for beaded chain necklaces, beaded rings and bracelets. They will learn the Macramé techniques for various patterns of friendship bracelets. In addition they will use Sculpey Clay bead stacking and combining techniques that achieve different patterns. When these beads are completed they can be incorporated into either the beaded or Macrame jewelry pieces. The students will not only learn new techniques to complete friendship bracelets, but they will make new friends and have a great time doing it!
