Learning Support
Learning Support at Visitation
Susan Jordan, Learning Specialist
As the Visitation Upper School learning specialist since 2005, I support approximately 30 percent of our upper school student body, grades 9-12. As a private, all-girls college-prep high school, I believe in our mission of providing an excellent education within a Catholic environment permeated by Salesian Spirituality and the living tradition of the Visitation sisters. As the learning specialist, I primarily work with students who have a diagnosis that allows them academic accommodations at school. Furthermore, I believe in our motto, Non Scholae, Sed Vitae - Not For School, But For Life. I teach and promote the skills that students need to succeed not only at school but in life beyond high school; these skills such as time management, organization, and self-advocacy are key to building self-confidence and achieving success.
My role not only involves directly supporting students but also collaborating with faculty and other support staff to provide for curriculum development and differentiated instruction so students with all learning styles can succeed in the classroom. Our faculty consistently strive to demonstrate a wide range of evidence-based teaching strategies and evaluate their impact on student learning. Together, our goal is to build academic excellence by providing high-quality teaching for our students.
As a parent of a Visitation Upper School student, you may witness academic challenges that your daughter experiences in high school. I personally know this due to having a daughter who attended Visitation from kindergarten to the graduating class of 2019. Over the 20+ years I have been at Visitation, I witnessed not only my own daughter but many other students who have attended our Visitation upper school, face challenges that have allowed them to grow into strong, independent young women. I have also witnessed how important it is to understand that each student moves at her own pace as she learns the skills that she needs to be successful here at Visitation. If you have any questions or concerns, or if you are interested in receiving a list of learning support resources, please do not hesitate to contact me.
