When choosing a title for Visitation's spring musical, VISTA Productions' director Wendy Short-Hays wanted to provide an opportunity for the students to perform and sing without masks, and to capture the show on a platform that could be shared. "The dream of performing in front of a live audience existed but was held lightly," Short-Hays said. "Back in January, there was no guarantee that we would be able to gather a group for an audience, but it was clear that performing outside would offer the best options for singing unmasked."

Knowing the company could use Visitation's expansive campus as a stage, Short-Hays chose Sweet Land the Musical. The Sweet Land story is set in 1920 Park Rapids farmland. "The expansive rolling green space, graced by trees, a pond and wildlife provides a stunning setting for the VISTA version of the show," Short-Hays said.

The show's all-female creative team, Perrin Post, Laurie Flannigan Hegge and Dina Maccabee, gave VISTA Productions permission to produce the show, making VISTA the first high school company to perform it.

Rehearsals began in February, with students wearing masks and staying socially distant. Once Minnesota spring arrived, the process continued outside in the performance space. "Moving the set pieces, props, costumes, sound and camera equipment for each rehearsal required the Sweet Land company to work like a well-oiled machine," Short-Hays said. "Each run and performance in the outdoor space meant complete set up and tear down, much like taking a show on tour."

VISTA focused first on capturing the show on video to be sure there would be a production to share with a wider audience. This also provided the VISTA technical team opportunities to run cameras, choose specific shots and mix sound.

Finally, last weekend, VISTA was able to perform the show for a live, sold-out audience, which Short-Hays described as a dream come true at the end of this unusual school year.
