Salesian Corner: Pinwheels for Peace

A message from Salesian Life and Campus Ministry:

"Peace is built in the heart and from the heart." –Pope Leo XIV

On Monday, September 21, the world celebrated the International Day of Peace around the global theme "Invest in Peace: for Everyone, Everywhere, Every Day." Established in 1981, the United Nations marks the annual day as a reminder that we all can be makers of peace in our own way. In 2001, International Peace Day was designated to be a period of non-violence and hope for a ceasefire. In the Salesian tradition, we know the importance of finding peace within our own hearts and sharing it with our communities and the world.

In 2005, two art teachers in Florida started "Pinwheels for Peace," a creative initiative to recognize the International Day of Peace. This year, Visitation art students decorated their own pinwheels with messages of peace, hope and love, and as a prayer of unity, "planted" their works of art outside around the Visitation statue. Connecting with our National Visitation Salesian Network theme, "Hearts United in Peace," students across all divisions enthusiastically poked their pinwheels into the grass at Mary’s and Elizabeth’s feet, joining in a collective prayer for international peace. Faculty, staff and other members of the student body were invited to participate and added their creations to the Visitation pinwheel garden.

May our hearts be united in the peace of Christ today, and every day!

Saint Francis de Sales, pray for us.
Saint Jane de Chantal, pray for us.
Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque, pray for us.

Live + Jesus!
