Vis Days for Girls Event

A message from Upper School Spanish teacher, Amanda Rosas:

A huge thank you to all who participated in the 2022 Vis Days for Girls Event!

The April 23rd Days for Girls Event proved to be a great success. The day started with presentations by Vis mom, Dr. Stephanie Callanan, who is an OBGYN. She explained the menstrual cycle and helped students understand that periods are a normal process of growing and maturing into womanhood. Next, Visitation alumnae, Rayna Kaeppe, who is pursuing a Master’s Degree in Public Health with a concentration on women and children, explained why and how Days for Girls work is so important in the lives of adolescents. When we give women ways to care for their menstrual health now, Rayna explained, we give women not only better opportunities for themselves, but for their children and grandchildren as well. Indeed both Dr. Callanan and Rayna Kaeppe helped the students and volunteers understand the importance of sewing reusable menstrual hygiene kits for girls and women around the world who do not have them.

After a few hours of cutting and sewing fabric and doing various other tasks to assemble the Days for Girls kits, the Visitation Alumnae Association provided lunch for everyone. At the end of the day, students formed an assembly line and were able to neatly and collectively complete 100 kits that will end up in the hands of a girl or a woman somewhere in the world. Our hope is that these menstrual hygiene products will give women what they need to feel empowered over their own health, and grant them increased access to educational opportunities within their communities and beyond.

Thank you to all those who donated fabric, underwear and other materials. Through your generosity, we were able to do our work. We wish to extend a huge thank you to the South of the River Days for Girls Minnesota Chapter, the Visitation Alumnae Association, the Maintenance and Grounds Crew, Señora Rosas, Mrs. Fenlon, Mrs. Burg, Ms. Asplund, Dr. Barter, Dr. Stephanie Callanan, Rayna Kaeppe, Student Council and the Women ActiVISts and all of the Middle and Upper School students for their time, energy and efforts in organizing and creating such a successful 2022 Days for Girls Event!
