Two Vis Athletes Sign On to Division I
Vis recently celebrated two high-performing student-athletes in National Letter of Intent signing ceremonies on campus. Andrea Barth committed to play soccer at Boston College and Sophia Mattaini committed to swim at the University of South Dakota, both of which compete at the NCAA Division I level.
In Andrea's Varsity career at Visitation, she was a four-year letter winner and earned All-State and All-Conference accolades. She was a major contributor when Visitation Soccer took third place in the MSHSL State Tournament in 2017 and finished her senior year as team captain and Most Valuable Player.
Sophia earned five Varsity letters in her swimming career with the Visitation Swim/Dive dynasty. She won five All-Conference awards and reached All-State qualifying times in six heats. Sophia competed in five state tournaments in which the Visitation Blazers won all five. The Swim/Dive team is currently in a seven-year state tournament winning streak and has won 11 overall state championships.
"Andi and Sophia compete at a high level for many reasons, but mainly because they put in the work," said Director of Competitive Activities, Elisa Ryan Manny. "The best thing Visitation Athletics can do to support student-athletes at all levels is to preserve and enrich their love for their sport. This is done through continuing to fortify the culture here at Vis, in which teammates win and lose together, coaches both care for and challenge student-athletes and the school itself remains committed to safety and love for each student, as well as skill development and competitiveness."
The majority of students at Vis participate in competitive activities. Vis offers 13 Varsity sports and has an annual average of 38 athletic teams. In the 2019-2020 school year, 82% of upper school students participated in a sport. Vis also offers a variety of non-athletic competitive activities, including Robotics, Debate, Mock Trial and more.
